英文文法中，有Subject-verb agreement，意思是单数主语就要配单数动词，複数主语要配複数动词，例如︰

A catalogue is on the shelf.
Three catalogues are on the shelf.

上述例子很容易，但有些句子会较为複杂，今集介绍Subject-verb agreement的守则。

ABC，要懂得分辨主语，有一些句子，主语与动词中间，夹杂了其他字，例如︰

The shelf with the annual reports （is / are） at the corner.

到底应该用is定are？如果以为annual reports是主语，要用複数动词，那就错了。其实，ABC个出现的名词才是主语subject，所以这句中shelf才是主语，应该用单数动词。

The shelf with the annual reports （is） at the corner.

以下句子的主语都是在前面︰

The number of members in our team is 20.

第二，要懂得分辨集体名词collective nouns

The group of shareholders （is / are） going to hold a meeting.

group是主语，令人混乱的是group这个字，表示多过一个人，但其实是集体名词，是单数主语，所以应该用is。和group一样的集体名词有很多，例如class， staff， panel， afmittee，例如︰

The afmittee meets here every Thursday.
